Just in time for the holidays, I thought I’d share a fun project that also makes a great gift. If you’re anything like me, you had a hard time throwing out any of your wedding “stuff.” Luckily I was able to fit all my extra accoutrement in this (semi) small box that is easy to tuck away in even the smallest closet.
After our wedding last October, I thought it would be a good idea to make Christmas ornaments out of my wedding memorabilia. These made awesome gifts for my mother and mother-in-law (and of course I made a couple extra for us to hang on our tree each year).
There are two types of DIY ornaments you can easily find at any local craft store. One is the glass version that only opens from the top (these come in plastic as well) and the other are plastic that pull apart from a seam in the middle. I found mine at Michaels, but save-on-crafts.com has some great ones.
I choose the glass kind, even though the opening is pretty small. For the contents, I pulled a few dried flowers from my bouquet, cut up pieces of our program and ribbon from our favor boxes. You can use anything you may have left over from the big day – napkins from the receptions, wedding invitations, honeymoon photos, pieces of lace from a garter, etc. Make sure to leave enough room that the items float nicely in the ornament and aren’t too crowded.
This sparked some other thoughts around themes for these cute gifts –
- Family vacations
- Baby showers
- Movie or concert tickets
- Graduation
Not to mention all the great simple winter-themed ornaments you can make with twigs, fake snow, mini glitter balls and just about 100 other items from the Christmas aisle!
Last night we purchased our tree from a tree farm and got to pull out all our great ornaments. I love remembering what I have to work with!
We also had the worker at the lot cut some branches away from the bottom of the tree so that I can use around the fireplace mantle. Needles to say, our house smells amazing (hardy hardy har).
Happy Holidays!
